At Gula Gula, we’re not just caring about rural livelihoods and trees, wildlife also matters to us. That’s why we’re partnering with @Biometrio to monitor the biodiversity thriving in our agroforests. You already saw some quite impressive species like tigers and tapirs in our recent videos.
Today, we're excited to bring you a rather rare piece of music: the calls of a bat! 🎵
📌 Why is it rare?
Bats emit ultrasonic echolocation clicks, squeaks, chirps, and fluttering noises, sounds that are far beyond the range of human hearing. The clear sounds you can hear here are the results of fascinating steps forward in bioacoustics and a lot of work from @Biometrio’s experts. This innovative work involves transforming high-frequency bat calls into an audible format.
📌Why is it important?
Despite the aversion they can generate, bats play a critical role in agroforests and restoration projects. They help with natural pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal, contributing significantly to biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Listen carefully, and you'll hear two distinct types of calls: one is for hunting while the other one is for socializing. When a bat is hunting, you'll notice the calls get faster and higher in pitch at the end. This helps them locate precisely the insect (their next meal) as they get closer. The most relaxed sounds are the ones they use to chat with each other.
The fact that these two sounds are regularly recorded means that our agroforests provide habitat and food resources (insects) to the bats. And yes, sometimes they also enjoy eating from some of the fruits.
Bioacoustic technologies are opening a whole new field of possibilities for bat monitoring.
