In 2023, IKEA took a bold step in transparency by releasing a public global wood supply map – the first of its kind in the sector – which identifies where its wood is sourced and which tree species are used.
This is a monumental feat considering the significant volumes of virgin and recycled wood IKEA uses for its furniture and packaging (14.9 million cubic metres in financial year 2024). WWF and IKEA have been working together for more than two decades, including on a goal of attaining 100% FSC-certified or recycled in wood sourcing. Starting from a 2010 baseline of 10%, by 2020 IKEA had reached 98%, and by 2022, 99.9%. Despite shifting away from Russia – previously its largest sourcing country – in 2024 IKEA maintained 97% (of which 16% was recycled).
