ARC, in partnership with Red Island Restoration and community Vondron’Olona Ifotony (VOI) members, successfully planted 28,130 mangrove propagules in July, 2024
With the aim of increasing biodiversity and forest enrichment, the following species were planted this month:
Ceriops tegal - 23,762 propagules
Rhizophora mucronata - 1,756 propagules
Bruguiera gymnorhiza - 2,612 propagules
Mature mangrove propagules are ethically sourced by local community members. Red Island Restoration, as a micro revenue stream, purchases harvested propagules from the community. Our monitoring and planting teams then sort the propagules in bundles of 20 to 50 depending on the species. During this triage process low viability and damaged propagules/seeds are removed.
Propagules and seeds are planted in best condition zones to ensure appropriate species placement, diversification, and disbursement. Planting also only takes place at previously assessed and demarcated zones.
