Planting Event - September 2024

ARC, in partnership with Red Island Restoration and community Vondron’Olona Ifotony (VOI) members, successfully planted 12,116 mangrove propagules in September, 2024.

With the aim of increasing biodiversity and forest enrichment, the following species were planted this month:

Ceriops Tegal - 4,460 propagules
Avecinia Marina - 2,926 propagules
Rhizophora mucronata - 4,730 propagules

Mature mangrove propagules are ethically sourced by local people. Red Island Restoration as a micro revenue stream purchases harvested seeds. Our monitoring and planting teams then sort propagules in bundles of 20 to 50 depending on species. During this triage process we remove low viability and damaged propagules/seeds.

Planting takes place in areas previously assessed as suitable for the species at hand and within previously assessed and demarcated zones.
