The native individuals planted aim to improve biomass in the system, especially considering it is a very sandy soil. Therefore, species were chosen according to their response to pruning, their vertical growth, and their shading capacities - that must be appropriate for an improvement in quality of coffee, but allow a good production of fruits.
Also, some species have longer life cycle to provide possibility of biodiversity improvement in the landscape, provision of ecosystem services in the long term, and wood harvesting, if desired.
Native species' row had pumpkin planted, to ensure better conditions for its development and also provide rapid revennue for the family.
