Heuningvlei Local Community Nursery

The Cedar Guardians have made significant progress in conserving biodiversity within the Cederberg Complex, particularly at the Heuningvlei nursery. Their efforts support ecological balance and strengthen community ties to the environment.

Recently, they organized a clean-up and weeding event with community members and Dawie Burger from Sustainable Cedar. By clearing weeds and debris and removing side panels, they improved air circulation and overall site health.

Effective water management is vital for the nursery. The team installed efficient irrigation systems, ensuring seedlings receive adequate hydration while minimizing waste. Their careful attention resulted in the successful propagation of 1 374 seeds.

Special thanks to Dawie Burger and Gert Theron, Heuningvlei’s cedar expert, for their invaluable expertise on propagation and irrigation practices.

The work at Heuningvlei highlights the power of collaboration between conservation groups, NGOs, and local communities. This restoration project not only benefits the Cederberg, but also fosters local passion, inspiring others to pursue sustainable futures. With dedication and teamwork, Sustainable Cedar, CapeNature, Bushman's Kloof, the Guardians and the community are making a lasting impact.
