In Chimanimani, elevation and soil type are key factors that determine the location of Afromontane, miombo, and tropical evergreen forest types.
Afromontane forests are a mosaic of grasslands and forests. This forest type is found at higher elevations from Ethiopia to South Africa.
Miombo woodland is one of the most common forest types in Africa--making up at least 10% of the continent's land area. Miombo woodland is usually found at lower elevations on red soil. In this forest type, many species drop their leaves during the dry season to conserve water.
Tropical evergreen forests are closed canopy forests with a rich understory of shrubs and lianas. Unlike miombo woodland, most species in this forest type do not drop their leaves during the dry season.
In addition to these forest types, there are three different grassland types that can be found in this region. Eden uses satellite imagery, historical data, and stakeholder input to develop restoration plans that make space for the diversity of forest landscapes.
