Cultivation in diverse agroforestry systems

An agroforstry system provides a much higher diversity in species and vertical structure than a conventional agricultural area. In the upper story high growing trees are not only giving protecting shade to the plants underneath but also offer a source of timber for construction or energy usage. The coffee plants are growing in the middle story, showing better productivity and health due to the given shade from above. On ground level other agricultural crops like pine apples can grow, complementing the family´s diet or income. Additionally, the cultivation is diversified by banana plants or other fruit trees. The diverse system is creating an own microclimate that keeps humidity and soil fertility. Due to the higher diversity the cultivation is also less vulnerable to pests. An agroforestry system is therefore creating a stable production system that can benefit the local nature and community.
