Uber announces its commitment to regenerating the country's natural heritage by joining the “Carbono Biodiverso” project, developed by the Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG).

The Carbono Biodiverso project, implemented in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Querétaro, aims to restore local forests through carbon capture, ecosystem regeneration, and biodiversity enhancement. Thanks to the involvement of landowners like Donaciano Chávez Márquez, who has protected 55 hectares of forest for the past eight years, the model has proven effective in forest regeneration and the creation of sustainable economic benefits for rural communities.

This collaboration reflects Uber's focus on supporting sustainable initiatives with positive impacts on the environment and local communities.

The Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, with over 30 years of experience, has been a cornerstone in the conservation and regeneration of ecosystems in the Sierra Gorda, one of the most biodiverse regions in Mexico. Since 1987, their tireless efforts have restored thousands of hectares of forest and created positive impacts on both biodiversity and the communities living in this unique region.

“A bold initiative for the forests of the Sierra Gorda, beyond markets, financing that operates under a local protocol, viable and respectful of forest owners, with Querétaro regaining its natural capital,” commented Martha “Pati” Ruiz Corzo, Director of Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda.

Uber will support this project through quarterly investments focused on the carbon capture capacity and ecosystem values of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. This support is expected to encourage the adoption of this model in more regions and the creation of local protocols that allow more landowners to access payments for carbon capture, creating a virtuous cycle between environmental conservation and the economic well-being of communities. Uber's commitment will be carried out through its Uber Planet program, a voluntary carbon offset initiative that allows users to reduce their emissions via a small additional charge on their trips, which is directed to projects like Carbono Biodiverso.

“We all have to do our part, and at Uber, we know we must act now to ensure a green future we can be proud of,” said Juan Pablo Eiroa, General Manager of Uber Mexico.

With this partnership, Uber reaffirms its commitment to the environment, joining the fight against climate change and supporting the regeneration of forest ecosystems and the biodiversity that defines Mexico. By collaborating on projects like Carbono Biodiverso, Uber contributes to creating environmental solutions that not only reduce carbon footprints but also promote the protection of natural habitats and stimulate the economies of local communities. This effort reflects Uber’s vision of a more sustainable future, where technological innovation and respect for the planet go hand in hand, creating tangible and lasting impacts on local communities and the country's ecological balance.
