Restoration of smallholder farms in Kenya

Biochar restores and regenerate degraded soils in Kenya, our restoration ecosystems uses high value biochar made with simple technologies.

Biochar is a black charcoal like product produced by the process of pyrolysis of agricultural wastes. At MOOF-Africa, we are using it as a soil amendment on agricultural soils. Biochar was inoculated with livestock manure, compost tea, vermi-liquid, soil mycorrhiza bacteria and fungi. An application rate of 20 kgs per 1.20 m x 50 m bed was used and mixed with the soil. This is not a scientific trial, though.

The results are impressive with the potato crop thriving with great vigour and health. This potato crop is rainfed and only 2 months old planted in August 2023 on a smallholder farmers farm. Our efforts to support smallholder farmers in their transition journey towards regenerative agriculture using biochar. This reverses the motivation to migrate to Mt. Kenya Forest and Aberdares forests for agriculture practices.

Trees are planted on the plot boundaries but we are developing better agroforestry designs on smallholder farms.
