In the picturesque coastal town of Kleinmond, a transformative educational initiative is making waves among small-scale fishing communities. The Indalo Cooperative Governance Course, a cornerstone of the Indalopreneur Sustainable Fisheries Support Programme, is designed to equip fishers with the skills and knowledge needed to build resilient cooperatives and sustainable enterprises.

Programme Overview

Supported by WWF South Africa and funded by NORAD, BMZ, and CMA-CGM, the Indalopreneur Programme aims to:

  • Enhance business acumen among small-scale fishers.
  • Strengthen cooperative governance and long-term resilience.
  • Promote efficient resource utilisation and effective marketing strategies.
  • Foster sustainable management of small-scale fisheries resources.
    Course Structure

The course is structured into three progressive levels:

Indalovator (Beginner) – SSF Cooperatives 1.0: This introductory level comprises six modules focusing on foundational business concepts such as Business Canvas, Strategic Thinking, and SWOT Analysis. Participants develop an entrepreneurial mindset and craft comprehensive business plans.

IndaloGrow (Intermediate) – SSF Cooperatives 2.0: Building upon the basics, this level offers seven modules that delve into Financial Planning, Operations Strategy, Marketing, and Resilience. It assists cooperatives in refining their business models and addressing challenges.

IndaloAccel (Advanced) – SSF Cooperatives 3.0: The advanced level consists of five modules covering Succession Planning, Human Resource Management, Community Engagement, and Commercialisation, ensuring cooperatives are well-prepared for sustainable growth.

Each module includes instructional videos, learner guides, interactive resources, and quizzes to reinforce learning.

Course Delivery and Certification

Duration: Each level requires approximately 4-6 hours to complete.
Progression: Modules must be completed sequentially, with a minimum score of 70% on quizzes to advance.
Certification: Upon successful completion of each level, participants receive a certificate, acknowledging their achievement and readiness to progress.
