The biggest interest in reforesting this region from the communities perspective is water. The indigenous communities in this area all have water that is brought to them directly from the natural springs above their neighborhoods and the community itself is responsible for obtaining their own water.
These communities have a deep understanding of how the forest and their water is interrelated, but they lack the resources to consistently maintain and protect their forests. Fire, pine beetle, and logging have deteriorated their forests which directly impacts their access to water.
We teamed up with neighborhood Water Committees to restore their forests around their water sources. The communities were incredibly grateful for the opportunity and blessed the project through their traditional Mayan ceremonies.
