Project
Haiti Reforestation Project

The objective of the Haiti reforestation project is to restore tree cover through implementation of agroforestry and watershed restoration near spring lines. The project will equip local farmers to design their plots, grow and care for their own trees, and increase the biodiversity of their farms. The mountainous terrain in the area has been intensively farmed for generations. With overpopulation, decreasing areas of arable land, and overall loss of productivity, charcoal production has become one of the few income-generating activities in the area.

Eden Projects is working to change the approaches to food production through the diversification of production. This includes increasing local knowledge on the value of trees as a more effective way to cultivate highland regions, which respond poorly to intensive agriculture and are best suited for agroforestry applications. The Haiti Reforestation Project will help to stabilize the land, increase soil fertility and moisture retention, resulting in higher production in fruits that can be sold locally and internationally for increased income of the farmers as well as more permanent and stable ecological function of the natural environment.

Eden Projects has worked to help reforest and provide food security through reforestation efforts in Haiti for several years. Value added by this program includes increased education and awareness for farmers through technical training which allows them to transform the way in which they produce and care for the land over the long term and on their own accord. Women are an integral part of the produce markets in Haiti and increased production of fruits will in turn increase their autonomy by increasing their incomes.
