Training on water governance.
How societies choose to govern their water resources and services has profound impacts on people’s livelihoods and the sustainability of water resources. Capacity building of WRUAs on good water governance is essential to achieving water security, fair allocation of water resources, and avoiding disputes.
Learning on best practices of integrated water resource management.
There is need for WRUA management committees to learn and improve institutional capacities so as to effectively manage water resources within their sub catchment areas. LISTEN Project is working with WRUAs to promote inclusivity and diversify in water resource management through public - private partnerships. This will improve WRUA management, accountability and professionalize WRUA services.
Catchment protection and restoration.
Water catchment protection and restoration are crucial for preserving our natural water resources' health and ensuring the well-being of our communities and ecosystems. Water catchment protection and restoration ensures long-term health and sustainability of our water resources. LISTEN has worked with Isiolo, Timau, Ngusishi, Naromoru, Pesi and Mutara WRUAs to restore degraded riparian areas. Through the planting of 14996 indigenous tree seedlings along riparian areas the project is contributing to increased number of hectares of farmland under improved watershed management. The WRUAs have internal capacity to monitor and report on the progress of tree growth through active WRUA monitoring committee and scouts.
Sub-catchment Management Plan.
SCMP is a tool developed to support protection, conservation and management of water resources and related natural resources within the sub-catchment to ensure sustainable and balanced water resources utilization for both socio-economic benefits and ecosystem management.
SCMP focuses on problems related to protection, conservation and management of water resources, ecosystem and other related natural resources including socio-economic activities that majorly depend on natural resources within the sub-catchment. It presents analysis of the problems and identifies sustainable solution strategies for proper management of water resources (quantity and quality), improvement of catchment conditions and enhancement of livelihoods. In addition, it analyses institutional capacity for effective and efficient implementation of the identified sustainable solution strategies.
LISTEN facilitated the development of Timau, Lower Ewaso Narok and Ngare Nything SCMPs through a consultative process where key stakeholders gathered consensus on strategy and framework for water resources, catchment conservation and management at the sub-catchment level to ensure sustainable use of the available water resources.
The activities included: conducting a transect walk with the WRUA members and the stakeholders; in-depth understanding of the SCMP chapters; critical analysis of the problems facing the catchment, the causes of the problems and their impacts; proposing solutions to the problems and activities to rehabilitate and revive the degraded catchment so as to ensure all the members within the catchment can access water.
