Site Preparation and Protection

During the dry season the restoration team works on creating live fences using tree cuttings to protect reforested areas from cattle that may want to venture in and consume the young mangrove propagules. Fodder species are used for the live fences to provide for the community’s livestock.

Our team also observes which areas have had the most success to create a successful planting area for the next planting season.

Red mangroves are planted in areas with the most tidal exchange. Black and white mangroves grow in areas that have a small amount of tidal cover throughout the rainy season. Buttonwood mangroves grow on the edges of the tidal zone.
