Bird Sanctuary

Natural mudflats are necessary feeding grounds for many bird species in southern Guatemala including pelicans, cormorants, herons, ibis, storks, and egrets. This area is listed as a biodiversity hotspot by Conservation International and an Endemic Bird Area (EBA) by BirdLife International. The estuary is listed as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) by the IUCN.
