Where and why are we planting our trees?

According to Global Forest Watch, 44% of natural forests have disappeared over the last 60 years in Madagascar.

Rural populations are the first affected by deforestation, and unfortunately they are also partly responsible for it. Indeed, precariousness and the absence of alternatives to meet their needs (energy, timber, human and animal food, monetary) push them to deforest, in order to extend agricultural land, or produce charcoal.

The main challenge that Bôndy has taken on in Andramasina is to set up an intelligent and collaborative reforestation process with local farmers. After an analysis of needs, Bôndy drew up a list of tree species useful for the homes of our partner farmers. These trees will indeed restore all natural services, but also produce revenues for farmers on a medium, long term.

Bôndy and partner farmers plant 4 categories of trees on more than a hundred plots:
Fruit trees: for household consumption and resale ;
Cash crops: for resale of higher value products (coffee, pink berries…);
Timber: to avoid cutting from natural forest.

The sustainable exploitation of these trees for farmers thus guarantees the survival of the planted trees!

In the long term, Bôndy's mission is to create sustainable value chains with farmers. These trees, in addition to the positive impact on the environment, will then stimulate local entrepreneurship and have direct benefits for the owners of the plots and their households.
