The Philippine Islands were once mostly covered by forests, but is now down to 24% from its original cover. The contribution of the Philippines to the mitigation of climate change is huge. Studies by Walker et al (The global potential for increased storage of carbon on land), Bastin et al (The global tree restoration potential) and Strassburg et al (Global priority areas for ecosystem restoration), show the potential of restoring these forests is top priority in fighting global warming. It is the top 5% priority countries to restore (Strassburg et al).
CarbonCycle Process Inc. is working with communities to restore the once forested areas through the project ReWARD, where the forest stewards will be rewarded for restoring and protecting the remaining forest cover thru regenerative agroforestry.
