June 2024 Update

More Rewilding News and Community to get new a Youth Centre.
The Ruwenzori Foundation helps us fund important community works. A need was recognised in the community for a place young people can visit and find stimulation.
Many local youths have nowhere to go for entertainment and recent crimes in the community and alcohol consumption among children, is a growing concern. A new Youth Centre was applied for and construction of this has begun within the Foundation grounds.
Rewilding
At the end of last year a new water source was discovered, which flows nicely and has provided the community with more water. The pond now overflows healthily into the forest where plans are to make an additional marsh ground. Our casual labourers hired from the community, worked on levelling the ground at the new youth centre, digging a fire barrier on the hill, worked on the road to the clinic, and fenced off the marsh. They slashed the savannah, behind the gallery, at the foot of the hill and dug the trails on the hill.
The black and white casked hornbill, and the crowned hornbill have been around for weeks, hopefully they will now stay.
Very exciting news is that a Hammerkop has nested by our section of the river Sebwe. A huge pile of grass and other materials hang on a low branch above the water.
The Duiker is commonly seen during daylight in the Savannah, this could be attributed to the now more open area which enables them to see distant threats and they therefore may feel more secure.
Many rodent trap were discovered recently but their owner has been identified and educated. He was apologetic and promised to stay away from our grounds.
The guinea fowl and the chicken companion, mentioned last news post, have sadly disappeared without trace. No suspect was ever found. But we do have an increased number of guinea fowls within our property.

General Site
The site is still looking good though there is no rain and the heat of the sun is intense, the young trees need watering so shading work now begins.
The main activities on site have been, fabrication studio dismantling and roof replacement, digging a fire barrier and levelling the ground and construction of the new youth centre.
We always welcome your support, towards our community work or tree planting - please contact the Ruwenzori Foundation or in Uganda our Foundry director Emmanuel Basaza via our contact page. Thank you.
