Co-Management Framework and Data Visualisations Finalised

The project's goal was to create a comprehensive mechanism enabling the Seychelles Fishing Authority to establish a sustainable management plan for marine resources targeted by artisanal and small-scale fisheries.

Voluntary Data Sharing and Visualization

Throughout this project, participating fishers voluntarily shared their vessel tracking and catch log data with project partners. This collaboration allowed us to create both individualized and aggregated visualizations for potential use in co-management. The two data streams were combined, providing fishers with monthly views of their catch log history alongside the corresponding vessel tracks.

Enabling Co-Management

The data collected fosters an enabling environment for the co-management of resources between fishers and fisheries management authorities. This data serves as a powerful tool in improving resource co-management, facilitating new licensing policies, adopting a more participatory stock assessment approach, and managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Empowering the Fishing Community

Incorporating fishers' data into the co-management process not only enhances the scientific basis for management decisions but also empowers the fishing community. This fosters a more collaborative and sustainable approach to fishery management. By presenting their data in co-management meetings, fishers ensure their voices are heard, and their on-the-ground insights are considered in management decisions, ultimately contributing to the resilience and sustainability of the fishery.
