Cha Simba Relics: A Biodiversity Haven at Risk
Relic Restoration at Cha Simba & Pangani

The Relics Project continues to make strides in ecological restoration across Coastal Kenya. To date, in 2025, a total of 4,716 indigenous seedlings were planted across two key sites:

• Cha Simba → 3,000 trees from 17 native species
• Pangani → 1,716 seedlings from 15 species

Of these, 494 saplings (in April 2025) were directly supported by Star Seed, strengthening our joint commitment to regeneration.

At Cha Simba, smallholder farmers and the Cha Simba Caves Association are nurturing an indigenous nursery with a capacity of 3,000 seedlings per month. Beyond restoration, the initiative supports ecosystem resilience, community income generation, and the revival of ancient medicinal plant knowledge.

At Pangani, a limestone coral ecosystem degraded by maize farming and local mining, restoration is now underway through a community-run nursery cultivating 20+ indigenous species. With support from WWF and The LEAF, the Pangani community is re-establishing its forest heritage and safeguarding biodiversity.

These efforts highlight the essential role of smallholder and tribal communities in regeneration. Representing just 5% of the global population, these groups protect 25% of the planet’s land and 80% of its biodiversity.

Next steps:

  1. Continued monitoring of seedling survival rates
  2. Nursery expansion
  3. Ongoing community training in seed collection, composting, and sustainable forest management.
