The dynamic partnership of Star Seed & The LEAF begins at Pwani University where a biodiversity sanctuary is underway.
On 10th November, we grew 485 indigenous tree seedlings from 48 unique native species.
Through a meticulous survey, we identified local tree nurseries with a wide range of diversity, particularly species with medicinal value, and partnered with them to supplement the livelihoods of local communities. The sources included community-based and governmental nursery's, Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Forestry Research Institute.
These seedlings not only add to the diversity of their nursery and restoration site, but also offer medicinal benefits, food, timber, and butterfly rearing.
Although we encountered challenges like sold-out seedlings and damaged bags, we persisted and even plan to source 115 additional seedlings from seed collection.
Our mission to enhance biodiversity and support local communities is the beating heart of this project. By planting 100% native and endangered species, we create a resilient and diverse ecosystem.
And the vision goes beyond just this project – it is a movement towards a healthier planet, a reimagining of the value of a thriving ecosystem, through the integration of indigenous knowledge and wisdom.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting initiative – the future is regenerative.
