Mangrove Restoration Hits 85% Survival Rate

In March 2023, Star Seed, in collaboration with local partners The LEAF and Friends of The Earth, planted 1,279 seedlings. The chosen 3 species - Rhizophora Mucronata, Avicennia Marina, and Ceriops Tagal - were carefully selected for their ecological significance.

With strong rains, the planted mangroves have thrived with a remarkable survival rate exceeding 85%. This success can be attributed to the efforts of the community, diligently monitoring and evaluating the growth of these hardy mangroves.

As we look ahead, our vision expands to encompass the entire spectrum of Kenya's mangrove species. Plans are underway to restore the creek with the remaining mangroves, including the exotic Oriental Mangrove (Brugueira gymnorrhiza), the intriguing Cannon Ball (Xylocarpus granatum), the elusive Xylocarpus moluccensis, and the patiently awaited germination of Heritiera Littoralis and Sonneratia Alba.

We take immense pride in supporting community custodians in their efforts towards regeneration. Our commitment goes beyond ecology towards social and environmental regeneration—a holistic approach that not only elevates the community group's livelihoods but also enhances their living conditions within the ecosystem.

We are thrilled to continue this journey with the Mangrove Forest Community. Stay tuned for more exciting developments as we carve out a regenerative and vibrant future together.
