Spotted: 🐗✨ White-lipped peccary – the team player of the rainforest
Facts about the white-lipped peccary:
▪️Team player with record size: White-lipped peccaries form huge social groups – sometimes up to 400 individuals. That's more than many monkeys or deer species ever manage.
▪️Climate engineers: By digging in the ground, creating small ponds, and spreading seeds, they actively shape their environment. In some forest regions, they are considered a key species for biodiversity.
▪️Strategic thinkers: When confronted by predators, they spontaneously form tactical circles: the young animals stand inside, the strong adults outside. They can even scare away pumas and jaguars.
▪️Louder than expected: When alarmed, white-lipped peccaries click and grunt in a chorus that can be heard hundreds of meters away in the forest.
▪️Due to their large territorial ranges, these animals need large areas of undisturbed wilderness, which are becoming increasingly rare in their native habitat.
