Through a previous reforestation project, a close collaboration was established with the Emberá, an indigenous community in Piriatí. As part of this initiative, our forestry partner was able to train many members of the community in reforestation activities and opened a tree nursery in Piriatí in 2022. The seedlings are cultivated from seeds until they reach a height of around 30 centimetres, making them robust enough to survive in the wild. This process typically takes about one year. Due to the high number of reforestation projects in the Darién region, our cooperative has become the largest buyer of seedlings from this nursery.

The tree nursery in Piriatí primarily employs women from the Emberá community to provide them with an alternative to the traditional role of housewife. By offering fair wages and training, the project aims to support their independence and create new opportunities within the community.
