Nestled along New Zealand’s remote West Coast, Okarito is home to stunning wetlands, rare wildlife, and ancient forests. As part of a local restoration initiative, volunteers gathered to plant native trees, including kahikatea, rimu, and tōtara, to restore lost forest cover and enhance biodiversity. With each seedling placed into the rich coastal soil, the project helps create vital habitat for native birds like the rare kōtuku (white heron) and supports carbon sequestration efforts. This hands-on effort strengthens both the ecosystem and the community’s commitment to conservation.
