Yenesew's day

Single mum Yenesew G. is one of our beneficiary farmers in Machakel. Her usual day starts with waking early to see her two older children off to school. She then makes the traditional food, injera, from teff grain for the day's meals, and washes the clothes so they dry in the afternoon sun. She then collects fodder for her oxen and cow from the restoration site next to her home, where several quality grasses are flourishing. This zero-grazing technique provides nutritious supplementary feed and allows her to keep her animals in her homestead for the most part. This saves them all from having to trek long distances, and means the animals are less likely to get lost or cause damage to other farms. Next she purchases fuelwood and collects water, and feeds the children when they return from school in the early evening. Yenesew's 62 coffee plants will mature in 2023 and yield approximately 40kgs of coffee per year, generating an income of about 10,000 birr ($200). She plans to set a portion aside for home improvement projects and use the rest to purchase school books and uniforms for her children.
