Another successful planting season completed

With no planting needed in the forest reserve, all the planting this season (November 2023 to February 2024) took place within the agroforestry or pine production livelihood schemes. This nursery worker is collecting agroforestry seedlings – Moringa, Leuceana, Faidherbia and Gliricidia – to distribute to two satellite nurseries where families in the agroforestry programme can access the seedlings close to their homes.

In the video, a farmer is planting a pine on his woodlot. Each of the 90 families in the pine production scheme received 333 Pinus kesiye seedlings for their quarter-hectare woodlots, totalling almost 30 000 pine seedlings planted this season!
The young seedlings are protected from long grass and competition for resources by ring weeding, which the farmer is doing here as he plants. Farmers also mulch all agroforestry and pine seedlings to protect them from termites, the biggest threat.
