Empowering Women & Protecting Elephant Corridors
In northern Tanzania’s Upper Kitete elephant corridor, Wild Survivors partners with the NARI Women’s Beekeeping Group to champion biodiversity conservation and community resilience. This initiative harnesses women-led beekeeping enterprises as a nature-based solution to mitigate human-elephant conflict (HEC) while strengthening livelihoods and protecting critical landscapes.
The Challenge
As elephants migrate through the Upper Kitete landscape, bordering Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, communities face increasing crop losses due to elephant raids. Farmers experience devastating financial setbacks, while elephants are at risk of conflict-related retaliation. Women, often the most affected by economic hardship, have limited access to sustainable income opportunities despite their crucial role in community resilience.
Our Solution
Through a circular Elephant Enterprise Hub, the NARI women’s group produces high-quality honey and beeswax products, creating market-driven incentives for conservation. Beehive fences, installed along farm boundaries, act as a natural elephant deterrent while boosting pollination and crop yields. The multi-use hub and learning centre supports value-added processing, marketing, and enterprise training in beekeeping and permaculture, enabling women to become conservation leaders while safeguarding the Upper Kitete elephant corridor. The women's group transformed the one acre plot into an organic garden of bio-intensive beds, kitchen gardens, mulching and compost, planting a variety of fruit trees and highly nutritious vegetables, supporting the community.
Key Achievements
📍 Over 300 beehives deployed across elephant corridors, protecting farms and wildlife.
🌍 Expanded market access for sustainably produced honey and beeswax, including national and export interest.
👩🌾 Women’s economic empowerment, with income reinvested in families and conservation efforts.
🌱 Landscape restoration through forest-friendly beekeeping and biodiversity monitoring.
Scaling Impact
With support, we aim to expand this model, engaging more women in sustainable enterprises while strengthening community-led conservation networks. By scaling the Elephant Enterprise Hub, we can protect more farmland, enhance ecological corridors, and empower rural women as conservation leaders.
