With financial and technical support from the ICSIAPL Innovation Fund, Jasper invested in mechanised hay production through planting of 30 acres of grasses (Boma Rhodes, Katambora Rhodes, Ex-Tosi) and fencing, clearing and reseeding of 50 acres of natural pasture with Cenchrus Ciliaris, Bushrye and Buffelgrass from Hygrotech. This will be eventually increased to 170 acres. In addition he invested in a chisel plough, spring tine cultivator, giro mower, 2-drum grass cutter, fertiliser spreader, hay baler and a tractor.
The objective of these investments is to provide sufficient forage (hay) for his cattle to stop overgrazing and migration of cattle, and to sell surplus hay to his neighbours. As for the latter, in the longer term he wishes to go into partnership with his neighbours to lease land and produce hay for selling to the community, or to provide agricultural machinery services for those who want to grow grass for hay making themselves.
The project also established a trial site (3 acres) in 2021 with Panicum Siambaza and Brachiaria Camello that did not do well. Rainfall in this area is too low for these grasses to thrive, unless under irrigation.
The community around the farmer will access the farm as a learning centre on improved forages, animal husbandry and landscape management.
