The project has helped the groups to set up a demo plot with varied improved fodder varieties. The demo plot is serving as a learning /training centre for the cluster farmers within the catchment area on forage production, conservation, utilization, and good livestock husbandry practices.

ICSIAPL project has supported the group through the Small Investment Fund (SIF) which has enabled the group to scale up their forage business. The grant helped the group to establish 10 acres of pasture plot, procurement of pasture seeds and forage harvesting equipment. The support also helped the group to venture into silage making as a business.

The following outcomes have been realised through the partnership with the project.

  • Enhanced participation of women in fodder production as a business. This has created employment opportunities for the women within the community.
  • The group benefitted from the leadership program which improved their leadership skills. The has enabled Elizabeth (Chairlady) become a respected leader withing the community.
  • The group has witnessed improved fodder production where a total of 1,000 bales of hay produced by the group in the last one year.
  • Improved knowledge and skills among the members. Specific skill acquired include good agronomical practices on improved fodder varieties, and adoption of water and harvesting technologies.
  • Improved income from sale of hay: The group have sold a total of 500 bales of hay in the last six months. This has earned the group a total of €1,000. The income was used to boost their kitty for loaning and saving association.
  • Improved feed security of the members: The group currently have a total of 300 bales in store as a form of security during the dry season.
