Recovering Andean Polylepis Forests in the Mojanda Lake Complex
Recovering Andean Polylepis Forests in the Mojanda Lake Complex
Imbabura • Ecuador Started in January 2021 Active Restoration
Summary
The project supports the recovery of environmental services provided by the Mojanda Lake Complex through reforestation with high altitude Andean forest species in the Imbabura region of Ecuador. The area is part of the Otavalo-Mojanda and Mojandita-Curubí Water Protection Areas, and has been highly degraded by humans. Reforestation and conservation focus primarily on native Polylepis trees, increasing legal protection, and training local communities in nursery management.
