Project name: Germany Mixed-Forest Restoration
Location: Forests throughout Germany
Method: Reforestation

Context: Addressing degrading forests

When forests in Germany were replanted in the mid- to late 19th century, spruce saplings were predominantly used, resulting in monoculture forests. These forests have proved to be susceptible to damage from storms, extreme drought, and beetle infestations, resulting in huge areas of degradation in the past few decades. Experts estimate that approximately 500,000 hectares will require reforestation in the coming years. This project focuses on identifying the most urgently affected areas and directing resources toward their restoration.

Solution: Resilience in sustainability

By replanting degraded areas with mixed-species, endemic tree saplings, these reforestation efforts improve the long-term health and biodiversity of forests around Germany. On-going monitoring and maintenance ensure the establishment of resilient ecosystems that support a wide range of plants and animals, as well as serve as carbon sinks. Mixed forests with site-appropriate tree species also purify drinking water, protect against erosion, and clean the air of particulates. By promoting rapid forest conversion and reforestation, this project contributes to Germany’s efforts in achieving its national climate targets.

We oversee the professional selection of tree species, coordinate planting and growth success through close cooperation with our forestry partners and confirm results through remote sensing and on-site inspections by our experts, as well as external, independent expert organisations.

Engage in restoration efforts

Many of the planting areas are easily accessible, providing an excellent opportunity for companies to organize project visits for their employees and use these efforts for corporate communications. The scalable nature of these project areas allows for both large and small contributions, making it possible for a wide range of stakeholders to get involved in the restoration process.

Reforestation project lifecycle

Forest systems require tailored approaches with planting plans suited to the region and climate. The process begins with selecting partners and regions to ensure optimal conditions for success. Planning sessions with landowners and forestry personnel are held to gain approval and finalize project details. Once plans are established, the areas are registered in a monitoring system and mapped to track progress. Preparation of the planting sites includes implementing protective measures to safeguard the environment and newly planted trees. Planting activities are then carried out according to plan, with continuous monitoring, on-site checks, and adjustments ensuring the project’s success and sustainability.

Monitoring

To ensure the highest standards of impact and project progress, independent third-party verifiers will closely monitor and evaluate all the aforementioned impacts. In addition, our team of technology and project experts conducts regular site visits, reaffirming our commitment to maintaining exceptional project quality.
