Tahuamanu, Madre de Dios

The Peruvian Madre de Dios landscape is located close to the tri-national border with Brazil and Bolivia. Although Madre de Dios is considered Peru's capital of biodiversity, it is also recognized as one of the regions most devastated by illegal and informal mining. In total between 2001 and 2020, Madre de Dios lost nearly 630,000 acres of forest due to rapid expansion of infrastructure projects, agriculture expansion, and population growth.

Tahuamanu, one of the three provinces of Madre de Dios, is where the headwaters of the most important rivers in southeastern Peru that flow to Brazil and Bolivia are found. However, Tahuamanu is an agricultural province and deforestation doubled between 2013 and 2016.

To combat this WWF will restore key jaguar forest habitat and improve forest management practices.
