In collaboration with the Laikipia government, the existing LISTEN program is being adapted to address the potential El Niño-related flooding risk in the arid Laikipia region of Kenya.
The SlamDam technology, developed in the Netherlands, will be strategically placed in Rumuruti. The SlamDam is a mobile emergency barrier that can be deployed wherever there's a threat of flooding. Inthe case of Rumuruti, it will be positioned along the bank of the Ewaso Ng’iro river as it enters the Ewaso Narok Swamp. This location was chosen due to Rumuruti's history of vulnerability toflooding during extreme rainfall events often resulting in property damage and health hazards.
The key benefits of deploying the Slam Dam in Rumuruti include safeguarding critical infrastructure like the water treatment plant, protecting the town from flooding, and ensuring an uninterrupted clean water supply. Ultimately, this contributes to the safety and well-being of the local community.
