Looking for new land in the Darién Region, Panama

Iliana Armién, Juan Gonzalez, the Head of our Forestry Operations and Niklas Veltmann from our Hamburg team met in Panama to thoroughly examine a large number of potential reforestation projects. They looked at ten fincas in total, four of which were shortlisted. The most important parameters in their location analysis were: soil quality, connection to infrastructure, regional climate conditions, usable area and which tree species are suitable for the respective areas.

According to our two forestry experts Iliana and Juan, each of the four fincas would be worth buying. On all the fincas we have very good soil conditions for the tropics, an appropriate topography, good connections due to the proximity of the Panamericana and the possibility to plant valuable precious woods. Among them are well-known hardwoods such as Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa), Ipe (Tabebuia impetiginosa) and Santos Mahogany (Myroxylon balsamum), whose natural stocks in the Darién are currently under enormous pressure.

With this new project we do not only want to expand our portfolio, but also set an example for sustainable land use in the Darién, Panama and the entire tropics.
