Biochar Pioneers in Sidama

The Sidama highlands have abundant surplus bamboo waste, an untapped resource for improving soil. Baliyu Beyene Bade, 22, and Tesseme Lalima Bitach, 24, members of the Hula district biochar MSME, are tackling this opportunity. Through biochar production, they address soil health issues, increase crop productivity, and generate economic opportunities for rural communities. Trained in business development and biochar production using locally made Kon-Tiki kilns, they earn up to ETB 2,000 per quintal of biochar. This initiative provides an affordable alternative to imported fertilizers while enhancing smallholder farmer productivity and soil health. Join their effort to unlock biochar's transformative potential.
