African Bamboo will produce a highly innovative, engineered bamboo-decking product referred to as Tropical Bamboo Decking, manufactured to European standards and norms. The product is mechanically stronger than most available hardwood or softwood decking and complies with the Natural Fibre Composites and Wood Plastic Composites standard EN 15534−420. The product has been developed in partnership with Fraunhofer Wilhelm-Klauditz Institut (WKI), a leading wood institute in Germany, resulting in a product that is superior in quality to those currently on the market, without the use of harmful chemicals or plastic resins. Specifically, the proprietary thermal modification process has resulted in advanced board properties in terms of durability, decay resistance, dimensional stability (no swelling and shrinkage), uniform colors at all depths, and enhanced fire protection and heat-resistance properties. Furthermore, the hardness, high density, and naturally homogenous properties of the composite boards give them a clear beauty, real wood grade, and enhanced performance when exposed to sun, humidity, rain, and heavy-duty use.
The manufacturing process includes thermally treating bamboo fibers and bonding them together with long-lasting, moisture-resistant phenol formaldehyde adhesive. The glued fibers run parallel with the length of the boards. The product is available in lengths of 1,860 mm, 2,200 mm, 3,000 mm, and 4,800 mm. Board width and thickness will be 140 mm and 20 mm respectively. Each size comes in a variety of novel 3D surface profiles including Diamond, Structured, Hand-scraped, Finely-rippled, and Smooth. The product is finished with decking oil, available in a variety of colors including Teak, Bangkirai, Silver-grey, and Larch. Our decking products are intended for outdoor use e.g. terraces, pool surroundings, and walkways. It is also suitable for commercial areas such as shopping malls, auditoriums, or other areas where high traffic or heavy loads are experienced.
