The government of Ethiopia is working in collaboration with an international alliance to enhance climate resilient green economy (CRGE) strategy and programming to respond to climate challenges. including the development of a national forest landscape restoration (FLR) initiative. The FLR initiative was initiated by the Environment, Forestry and Climate Change Commission (EFCCC) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) in 2016, with the goal of identifying forest landscape restoration options at the national level.
According to the government's analysis of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples region, 760,745 ha have the potential for highland bamboo restocking and expansion, and 2,429,174 ha of land are suitable for agroforestry development.
Building on EFCCC/WRI's analyses, the National Bamboo Strategy & Action Plan, and the needs of African Bamboo's business model, we plan to contribute to the FLR initiative by restoring patches of native forests and establishing bamboo agroforestry systems over an initial 1,000 ha in Sidama during the first ten years of operations.
