The woreda has an estimated population of 144,934 people spread across an area of 307 km². Approximately 7,732 citizens live in an urban setting, with an estimated 6,410 people or 1,407 households living in Hagere Selam town. Around 137,201 people (95%) or 27,440 households live in rural areas. Population density is 471 people per km², which is one of the more densely populated areas of Sidama region.

In terms of bamboo, Hulla has six bamboo cooperatives: Edget Minch, Chelbessa, Kankicha, Bochessa, Teticha, and Hangaye, with a total of 258 members.
