With this project, empty plots or plots with scattered trees nearby Idanha-a-Nova (project’s municipality: Herdade da Urgueira, Idanha-a-Nova) are forested. These are all private lands that we are transforming into forests. The first 3400 trees of this project were planted during March 2023. The activities in the next years include monitoring and replacing the dead plants.

Context
Some years ago, there was a big fire in the region. At the same time, years of Eucalyptus Tree Exploitation damaged nature and the soil and incremented desertification. Natural Fauna had nothing to eat and people did not like the Eucalyptus Landscape.

Now, we are bringing back the old local Iberic forestry system with Quercus suber (Cork Oak), Pinus pinaster, and Pinus pinea as the main species. In the future, this system will be combined with animal pastures (sheep, pigs, and goats).

This is an interesting project because:

• Cork trees form an anti-erosion system
• The project creates jobs
• There is CO2 retention
• Improving soil organic matter
• Preventing rain, sun, and wind erosion
