Our motivation
Togo is not a forested country but suffers from severe forest degradation with an annual deforestation rate of 4.5%. This is one of the highest deforestation rates in the world.
Between 2002 and 2020, Global Forest Watch notes a loss of 300ha of primary rainforest in Togo. This is equivalent to an 18% decrease in the total area of primary rainforest during this period.
Our project
In each of these communities, we establish a nursery producing cash crops and forest trees. Half of the trees planted are cash crop trees that are distributed free of charge to the local population, thus providing them with a new source of food and income. By providing these natural resources necessary for daily survival, our aim is to prevent slash-and-burn actions in nature reserves, national parks and forest areas.
Furthermore, our local team is continuously adapting our "direct seeding" technique to the specificities of the Togolese territory. Since 2021, we have initiated the monitoring and evaluation of our plantations by the University of Kara through its Laboratory of Sanitation, Water Sciences and Environment.
