Mangrove Assessment in San Teodoro

Headed by Ubá's Technical Lead, Russel Climaco, the team successfully identified the status of the mangrove community structure in San Teodoro.

The measurements were made together with four Bantay Dagat (community fish wardens) and local residents, who were oriented and conducted the groundwork for the mangrove community structure assessments. This capacity-building initiative strengthens local involvement and knowledge sharing.

Speaking directly with the local communities, landowners, and the municipal government, particularly the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) and barangay council, played a crucial role in legitimizing our on-the-ground initiatives. Prior to the visit, sampling lots were pre-identified and significant coordination and information gathering were conducted with the Municipal Assessor's Office (MASSO). These engagements provided invaluable insights into the dynamics in San Teodoro in relation to the use, classification, and conservation of their mangrove forests. Understanding their perspectives and interests is key to fostering a collaborative and sustainable carbon project.

In the 36-hectare area surveyed, Ubá observed a diverse mangrove community comprising of 14 species. Notably, the A. rumphiana species, characterized by large trees reaching 18-20 meters in height, was prominent but sparsely distributed. The presence of recruits further indicates the potential for sustainable regeneration.

Ubá's on-site exploration in San Teodoro reinforces our commitment to responsible and informed project development. We are excited about the prospect of collaborating with the vibrant community in San Teodoro to further our collective goals in ecological conservation.
