Mangrove awareness-raising and planting orientation

Mangrove planting must be meticulously planned and studied. This is what delegates from the barangay and municipal local government, AIM MDM Class of 2023, and PNP Maritime Group learned after the local Ubá team in the Philippines conducted a mangrove awareness-raising and planting orientation in the idyllic island barangay of San Antonio in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.

During the event, Uba Technical Leader, Russell Climaco, emphasized the importance of following proper mangrove planting protocols. Finding the appropriate location and planting the right species in the area are crucial for the survival of the seedlings. There are also specific techniques that need to be understood before planting, e.g. timing, specifically during low tides in stable weather; spacing and density; and maturity of the seedlings (preferably propagules with at least six leaves). Steadfast community involvement is also key for the long-term growth of the seedlings.

The talk concluded with Uba Project Leader, Benjie Panahon, highlighting the benefits of conserving and rehabilitating mangrove forests. For coastal communities, mangroves mitigate floods and protects against strong waves and storm surges. For various species of fish, crustaceans, and birds, mangroves are safe havens and breeding grounds. Mangroves also improve water quality in coastal areas by trapping sediments and removing pollutants. More importantly, mangroves are exceptional at sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, and are considered one of the best nature-based solution in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Together with its partners Blue Finance and Blue Alliance Philippines, Ubá Sustainability Institute has embarked on a blue carbon project to conserve and rehabilitate mangroves along the Verde Island Passage (VIP) corridor, including the municipality of Puerto Galera.
