Bridging Carbon and Conservation: Ubá Explores Araceli's Blue Carbon Frontier

In a significant stride toward environmental conservation, Ubá recently embarked on a week-long field mission in Araceli, Palawan to explore the possible expansion of our mangrove conservation and restoration initiatives in the Philippines. Our local team also attended the the signing of the co-management agreement between our partner institution, Blue Alliance Philippines (BA), and the Municipal Government of Araceli, which aims to bolster the enforcement and preservation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the distant but scenic island town.

Araceli, a fourth class municipality located in the northwestern part of Palawan, boasts an incredibly diverse and ecologically rich landscape. It shares the island with the Municipality of Dumaran, which could soon be BA's second local government partner in the province. The region is teeming with extensive mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and pristine coastal ecosystems, making it an ideal candidate for a blue carbon project.

During the visit, Ubá presented to Mayor Sue Cudilla and the Sangguniang Bayan (SB), met with heads of key government offices, and engaged with local environmentalists to understand the region's ecological dynamics and the potential for implementing sustainable blue carbon initiatives. The team also conducted rapid assessments on selected mangrove areas in the municipality. These efforts assessed the feasibility of expanding our undertakings to Araceli, ensuring that it aligns with the community's needs and environmental goals.

With "benefit-sharing" as one of our core principles, Uba's ventures not only focuses on carbon sequestration but also emphasizes the socioeconomic benefits for local communities. Mangrove ecosystems, in particular, serve as vital nurseries for various marine species, providing livelihood opportunities for fisherfolk and supporting biodiversity. We are keen on ensuring that any expansion of our blue carbon project in Araceli is mutually beneficial, fostering ecological resilience and sustainable livelihoods.

As discussions progress, Ubá remains optimistic about the prospects of establishing a meaningful and lasting partnership with Araceli, contributing not only to the global fight against climate change but also to the well-being of the local community. The exploration of new territories for the expansion of the blue carbon project is a testament to the Institute's dedication to fostering sustainability and resilience in diverse ecosystems around the world.
