Project
Biotope complex Brönninghausen

Initial state

The majority of the project area consists of species-poor arable land, which was used intensively for agriculture and especially for maize cultivation for the farm; in the northern part of the area there is a wooded area and to the south the embankment of a stream.

Target state

The aim is to transform the area in Brönninghausen into high-quality and diverse ecosystems and to upgrade species-poor areas into species-rich habitats and protected areas. To this end, a variety of measures are being taken to transform the project area into a wonderful biotope complex where various animals and plants can find a home.

Measures

Planting of orchard meadows

Agricultural use was stopped on the entire area in order to begin the renaturalisation process. Most of it is being converted into orchard meadowss with native tree species surrounded by extensive grassland. Thanks to their structural diversity, these orchard meadows provide plenty of food and shelter for birds, insects and amphibians.

Creation of riparian strips

In another section, water margins are being created close to the stream to protect the watercourse and the ecosystems around it.

Initial afforestation

In addition, initial afforestation and the development of forest edge zones will take place in order to expand the neighbouring forest in the north of the project area.

Planting of field hedges

In addition, field hedges are being planted at various points in the area. These not only serve as an important habitat and structure the area, but also protect the natural space from wind erosion and ensure that the individual biotopes are linked to form a biotope network.
