#BluingTheEarth #MembirukanIndonesia: Karbon Biru Mangrove Conservation Project
Reforestation Conservation City 0,43 ha

Karbon Biru aims to protect marine ecosystem, coastal degradation, poverty, and climate change mitigation by:

  1. Overing carbon offsetting that grow over time using biological CCS. Karbon Biru is not an end-of-pipe solution, wherein we aim to inspire, educate, and restore mangrove through crowdfunding and carbon offsetting under P2P model for fish farmers and coastal residents. Thus, our approach will have no conflict of interest with the coastal society for the sake of conservation.
  2. Wastewater treatment and silvofishery: with aquaculture coupling. The fish farmers can benefit from high-value farmings, such as crabs, mussels; zero to low maintenance (no aeration and microbes maintenance); and can be further developed to education and recreation with interpretive signage, walking and bike paths and green space.
  3. Constructed wetlands for brackish ponds effluent: hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphorous recycling; and potentially be one of the first constructed wetlands in Indonesia
  4. Advocating the importance of mangrove and popularize mangrove belts in the coastal regions against tsunami, erosion, winds, waves, and to catch ocean morphodynamics.

Karbon Biru aims to revolutionize the conventional aquaculture farming by mangrove utilization and be the powerhouse to educate and further accelerate the blue forest rebuilding. We want to create mangrove industry and blue economy through innovation and having partnership in different sectors to create innovative mangrove-derived products.

Through this pilot project we aim to explore the effectiveness of a CO2 reduction with coastal ecosystems through using roots of plant species known as mangroves. The mangroves can maintain the stocks of carbon up to 70% of the total carbon stocks, also referred to Blue Carbon. We measure our progress by measuring carbon offsetting estimation (allometric model and CHNS empirical testing) for our 1,000 trees.
