Canvas and Orchids Floating lodge is a shining example of Community Based Ecotourism (CBET), which helps create a sustainable economy that protects the local ecosystem.
The jobs and income from CBET create a financial incentive for protection that did not exist previously. The sale of carbon credits from this project is the financial bridge that funds the development of CBET and other community benefits. This is the core strategy of the entire project.
Canvas and Orchids is the first floating ‘ecolodge’ in the world. It is made from sustainable, locally-sourced materials, and operates in the most environmentally friendly way possible. It prioritizes the well-being of the Southern Cardamom landscape and the people who live here.
Lodge workers are hired from local villages. This changes their income source from damaging practices such as illegal logging and poaching to a sustainable way of life that helps tourists experience the beauty of the Southern Cardamom watershed.
This lodge allows people worldwide to support the health of this extraordinary ecosystem through tourism. The lodge has been visited by over 4,000 tourists and brought $430,000 in annual income to fifteen local communities in the first quarter of 2020 alone.
