Three Asian Elephants wading through a river in the Southern Cardamoms. In 2001, the Cardamom Rainforest Landscape experienced a devastating time in which 29 tigers and 39 elephants were poached due to the construction of a new highway. This event is what initially sparked emergency intervention from Wildlife Alliance at this project area.
Currently, only 250 Asian Elephants remain in Cambodia, most of which reside within the Cardamom Range . The Cardamom Range provides ideal conditions for these magical creatures and is one of Asia’s last 7 remaining elephant corridors. An elephant corridor is a natural habitat linkage in which elephants can freely travel between secure habitats without human disturbance. 80% of the Elephants that are still left in this ‘Southwest Elephant Corridor’ live in the Cardamoms year round. Since 2006, zero poaching of this IUCN Red Listed mammal has been enforced in our project area in hopes to save these magical creatures from extinction.
