This project, started in 2022 and implemented by partners including GEF Coastal Marine Governance, Oceana Chile, Future of Fish Chile, the communities of Puerto Gala and Puerto Gaviota in the Aysén region and other actors in the sector, is focused on identifying gaps and needs in these communities with the objective of achieving complementary marketing channels for southern hake.

The southern hake fishery is distributed across the regions of Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes. The annual quota of southern hake is split: 60% is reserved for the artisanal sector and 40% for the industrial sector. However, this fishery is the only one where the total transfer of the quota is allowed, so the artisanal fraction of the Aysén and Magallanes regions is almost entirely captured by industry. The collaborative work of all parties involved presents a feasible alternative for governance and transparency in designing more effective marketing schemes.

With the pilot program, it is expected that artisanal fishermen will be able to bring southern hake to different locations with a product that stands out for its origin, traceability and quality.
